An ambitious multi-million pound project to begin redeveloping Kirkgate station in August this year, is being spearheaded by Groundwork Wakefield. The scheme aims to bring this historic building back to everyday use with the help of its partners, Network Rail, Northern Rail, Wakefield Council, Rail Heritage Trust, Metro and Grand Central and local residents.

The development will provide a safe and important gateway into the city and house facilities for local communities and enterprises. In conjunction with local residents, Groundwork and its partners are aiming to reintroduce a sense of community pride into the area, helping to reduce crime and ensure the safety of tourists, commuters and residents alike.

Plans will include units for new businesses, a cafe, a retail outlet with rail ticket sales, exhibition spaces, meeting rooms for the community and local business and accommodation for Groundwork Wakefield.

Over the coming weeks , Groundwork will begin conducting a consultation process with the help of Wakefield City Academy pupils and we would like your views on the station as it is now and how you feel the improvements will benefit the area. This information is extremely important to secure additional funding and to ensure the development meets the needs of local people and users of the station. We will be looking to wrap up the consultation views by the end of February.
