Young volunteers celebrate with Groundwork Wakefield
Young people from the Wakefield area were awarded certificates by Corporate Director of Family Services, Elaine McHale and Cllr Pat Garbutt, cabinet member for children and young people for their volunteering work with environmental charity Groundwork Wakefield on Thursday 10 June at Wakefield Town Hall.
The black, white and purple themed event celebrated the achievements of over 180 young people aged between 16-25 years who took part in the Groundwork Wakefield We Can Volunteers’ project. The young people succeeded in a range of programmes on offer, including Sport4u, water and land-based activity with Project Pugwash, Horticultural work and Youth work.
The We Can Volunteers Project is part of the national youth volunteering scheme which builds on the experience of working with young people being supported to identify projects which are appealing to their peers and have benefit to the wider community. The project is generating a wide range of volunteering opportunities for young people which are creative, innovative and reflect their passions and concerns.
Helen Thackray, Co-ordinator for the We Can Project at Groundwork Wakefield, said:” Volunteering has a huge role to play for future training and work opportunities as well as self-confidence and team building for the young people who take part in the projects. I am very proud to say that this year our young people have done incredibly well.”
She added: “This celebration event was to say thank you and showcase the hard work, time and dedication they have put in”
