Group on healthy eating sessionGetting stuck in to healthy eating

A new cook and eat scheme teaching people how to cook up healthy food using home grown ingredients will begin on Wednesday 30 September.

The six week long sessions will run through into next year with each lesson lasting under two hours. The lessons are aimed at community groups to come along and get involved with the Growing for the Future project as well as learning basic cooking and healthy living skills.

The sessions at Thorne’s Park Nursery will be run by Karen McGuire, food and health development worker with Wakefield District Community Healthcare Services’ Community Food and Health team.  The first one is being delivered to six adults with learning disabilities from Wakefield Councils Day Opportunities Services.

The scheme has been delivered through a partnership between Groundwork Wakefield and NHS Wakefield District as part of the Change for Life campaign.  Change for Life is a nationwide movement that is designed to help people make changes to their lifestyles so that they can eat well move more and live longer.

Liz Charlesworth, Growing for the Future Project co-ordinator, said: ”The sessions are aimed at community groups to come along and get involved with the Growing for the Future project as well as learning basic cooking and healthy eating skills. They are a great way to gain the basic knowledge of cooking healthy and on a budget with the food that’s being grown here at Thorne’s Park.”

Food and health development worker Karen McGuire, said: “In today’s fast-food society not enough people are aware of the health and money saving benefits to growing your own food and using them to prepare healthy dishes.  Programmes such as the Growing for the Future project help us to get people enthusiastic about growing and eating their own food.”
