Our partners the River Stewardship Company are working with the Environment Agency on an ambitious project to help improve local waterways.
Jonathan Moxon from the Environment Agency explains: “Riverlution aims to bring people together to make Sheffield's rivers and waterways safe, clean and ecologically rich environments for everyone to enjoy. By creating a network of interested individuals, groups and organisations, we hope that the major physical improvements to Sheffield’s waterways that we’re currently undertaking will be maintained long term.”
The Riverside pub in Kelham Island were the first to sign up to Riverlution, and will be hosting a launch event on Thursday October 20th. The Mowbray Street bar and performance venue, which is owned by city arts organisation Point Blank, will develop and maintain a new waterside area for visitors.
Starting at 2pm, the launch will include short talks from both the River Stewardship Company and the Environment Agency, with entertainment throughout the rest of the day including poetry and music from Riverside regulars Opus Acoustics and a new piece of work from Point Blank.
Riverside manager Chris Pritchard said: “We are delighted to have been asked to get involved at this level and really look forward to seeing our own waterside area transformed into a viable space rather than just a piece of inaccessible waste land.”
“The River Don is a vital part of Sheffield and for the Riverside it is one of our great selling points. Visitors are already surprised at how clean the river is and that as you look out onto the water you can see kingfishers, herons, fish and all sorts of wildlife. People will be amazed how, even though we are so close to a busy main road, when you are down by the waterside there is no noise at all – it’s a really tranquil spot that we want everybody to be able to enjoy with us.”
All are welcome at the Riverlution launch event, starting at 2pm on Thursday 20th October at The Riverside.
