Two groups of young people from local schools have written and recorded their own songs, to raise funds for charities close to their hearts.
Rebels and Fighters are a group of four fifteen-year-old girls from Wingfield Business and Enterprise College – Megan Williams, Claire Woodburn, Ellie-Rose Jackson and Yasmin Middleton. They’ve collectively penned and recorded an album of nine songs, and designed their own album art work. Megan said: "It was really good fun and an inspiration writing and recording the album, but it was quite emotional too as the lyrics were about different issues in our life that had an effect on us."
Groundwork’s Youth Worker Carole Foster met the girls when they were recording a jingle at school. All loved to sing, and Carole suggested they put their talents to good use, with a creative enterprise project to raise funds for charity. All the funds from Rebels and Fighters debut album will go to Cancer Research.
Inspired by Rebels and Fighters, four eleven-year-old girls from Winterhill Comprehensive decided to write and record their own charity single. Anna Kinbaid, Melissa Foster, Beth Harper and Reanna Bowdler wrote Song for Ben about, and in aid of, group member Anna’s cousin Ben, who has complex medical needs. The proceeds generated will support Ben’s Footsteps to Independence Charity.
Carole’s project Turning the Corner works with young people across Rotherham to encourage them to take a more active role in society, starting in their own neighbourhoods. Carole said: "These girls have taken something they love to do and used it to benefit others. They’ve managed the whole process themselves from start to finish, and gained skills in enterprise, team work, music and art as a result."
Both groups performed their songs at the charity CD launch concert at Winterhill Comprehensive School, on Thursday 15th December. Over £350 was raised on the night through entrance fees and CD sales, and will be donated to the two charities. An additional £100 was raised by Rebels and Fighters after their performance in Rotherham town centre, and more orders for both albums have since been placed.
