Doctors leap into action...
Our team of Green Doctors are whizzing around
Sheffield powered by gas from compost, thanks to an environmentally
friendly Sprinter van donated by Mercedes-Benz in partnership with
Northside Truck & Van Ltd. Methane gas is produced naturally
during the composting process as organic matter decomposes.
Keeping green is a top priority for the Green
Doctors, who are working to address fuel poverty in Sheffield. The
Green Doctor service offers free home energy surveys, which
identify where houses are potentially losing heat, and ways in
which the householder could be more energy efficient. Once a survey
is completed, a second appointment is arranged to install energy
efficiency measures, such as draft excluders, reflective radiator
panels, water savers, hot water tank jackets, PC Power Down devices
and energy monitors.
Project Manager Wendy Bussey tells us more: “A
home survey is like a health check for your house. It identifies
ways to save both energy and money, starting at the top of the
house and working down. With over 4million households across the UK
in fuel poverty, projects like this one provide a much needed
service to local people living in hard to heat homes.”
This is an exciting career opportunity for
our seven new recruits. After training from local energy
expert Nick Parsons of South Yorkshire Energy Centre, they’re now
confident in advising customers on the best ways to save energy in
The Green Doctor South Yorkshire project is a
partnership currently involving Groundwork Sheffield, Groundwork
Dearne Valley, The South Yorkshire Energy Centre (SYEC), Sheffield
NHS, East End Quality of Life Initiative, Pennine Housing
2000 and South Yorkshire Housing Association.
