The University of Sheffield's Jessop West building
Consultation on The Green Roof Code is soon to be launched. Since securing the three-year Life+ funding, a team from Groundwork Sheffield and The Green Roof Centre spent 2009 reviewing the latest research, in discussion with the experts at GRO (Green Roof Organisation) and Living Roofs, and liaising with wider industry specialists, Groundwork Sheffield together with The Green Roof Centre is now seeking your views.
Green Roof Centre Manager Jeff Sorrill will officially launch the consultation on the Code at this year’s EcoBuild event in March, inviting interested parties to view the Code online to comment on it. A second version of the Code will then be prepared, incorporating feedback given during the consultation process, and a further round of consultation will begin in October. A final version of the Code will be available online from January 2011.
Green roofs perform a vital role in mitigating the effects of climate change by reducing the need for artificial cooling in hot weather and capturing rainwater run-off, as well as providing a range of habitats for urban wildlife. But green roofs can only deliver on these environmental benefits if installed to the highest specifications. Currently there are no UK-specific standards, which mean there is an over-reliance on European standards which have not been developed for the UK climate.
The Life+ funding contributes to a Euros €914,213 project that will enable Groundwork Sheffield, in partnership with national and European experts, to establish a UK code of best practice for the design and installation of green roofs. Project partners include The Green Roof Centre, Livingroofs.org and Homes and Communities Agency. LIFE+ is the EU’s financial instrument supporting environmental policy development across Member States.
