More than 40 jobs for young people in North Yorkshire have been created with environmental charity Groundwork thanks to a new government initiative.

After successfully securing a bid of £260,000 through the Future Jobs Fund scheme, North Yorkshire County Council have partnered up with Groundwork North Yorkshire to employ 19 gardeners who will work around Scarborough in the council parks dept.

Groundwork North Yorkshire has also contracted 12 people, eight to work on the Cinder Track railway line and four Countryside Workers.

The cash injection has come from the Governments new initiative to create 150,000 jobs, primarily aimed at 18-24 year olds who have been out of work for nearly a year.  The Government has welcomed innovative bids from local authorities as part of a competitive process.

Tom Mutton of Groundwork North Yorkshire, said:” This is a fantastic opportunity for these young people to learn a wide range of skills in horticulture, landscaping and conservation, and to try out new career opportunities. They will be working throughout the borough's beautiful parks, open spaces and countryside on some very interesting and exciting projects. As well as the benefits to the young people themselves, these open spaces will also benefit greatly from the improvements carried out, which can the be enjoyed by many of the borough's residents and visitors”.

The County Council has worked with partners, including Scarborough Borough Council and Hambleton and Richmondshire District Councils, Groundwork North Yorkshire, Foundation Housing, Unison and the Coast & Moor Voluntary Agency to look at much needed areas of employment in the county where young skills were needed and young people could make a valuable contribution to their communities.

The jobs are open to young people in receipt of jobseekers allowance and where possible they will be supported in their employment beyond the six months of the Future Jobs Fund.

All the jobs across the county are intended to benefit young people by engaging them in community and cultural activities. The jobs to be funded will be in sectors such as catering and hospitality, community build, community wardens, town guides, environmental champions, healthy living advisers and youth engagement workers.
