Young people line up for a sack race at the opening event
Tuesday 29th March marked the official opening of the Tinshill Garth Playful Landscape; a newly improved green space in the heart of the Tinshill community in North West Leeds. The new facility was opened by Councillor Sue Bentley who celebrated with members of the local community; immediately putting the space to good use in a series of fun games led by Groundwork.
The site has been transformed from an overgrown and neglected space with old, unusable play equipment, to an attractive green space featuring natural elements such as grassy mounds, large stone boulders with animal carvings, by stone carver Melanie Wilks, fruit trees, plants and wildflower meadows. A bespoke steel entrance feature has also been created by Metal Artist Julian Wadsworth, with the help of residents and the children from Cookridge Primary School.
The project has been carried out by Groundwork in partnership with North West North Homes Leeds, and funded by Leeds City Council, through their Playbuilder programme, and the local Area Committee’s Well-being Fund.
Cllr Sue Bentley commented: "I'm delighted that this informal play area has been completed as it has made a great improvement to the former dilapidated playground. There has been consultation with the community and involvement on site with local people of all ages. Some of the young people at Cookridge Primary School worked with the artists on ideas for the sculptures and entrance feature which was a great experience for them.”
As the site matures it is hoped that it will become a haven for wildlife, as well as a much-loved and well-used community space.
