Local environmental regeneration charity Groundwork’s fuel poverty tackling scheme, the Green Doctor service, has just been announced as a finalist in the 2010 Yorkshire Post Environment Awards. It has been short-listed in the climate change category, in recognition of its environmental benefits.

The second annual Yorkshire Post Environment Awards ceremony, which recognises the determination of groups and individuals to protect the environment and reduce their carbon footprints, will be held on Thursday March 4.

The Green Doctor service has been running in targeted areas of deprivation across Yorkshire since 2007. As well as tackling climate change, it helps the most vulnerable (including the elderly, disabled and families with young children) save money on their fuel bills and improve their health – totally free of charge. The service involves workshops on energy and money saving tips and home visits where the property is assessed for energy efficiency before the fitting of technical measures, such as energy efficient light bulbs and reflective radiator panels, free of charge.

Claire Pratley, Climate Change Team Leader at Groundwork, says:

“We’re very honoured to be nominated in the Yorkshire Post Environment Awards. We think the Green Doctor service is pretty unique with its many benefits including energy and money saving, improved health and employment opportunities it provides for local young people and we’re thrilled to have been recognised.”
