Bramham residents are celebrating as a neglected public space is set to receive a well-deserved makeover thanks to almost £50,000 from the Big Lottery Community Spaces programme.

The unsightly patch of land at the junction of Wetherby Road and Lyndon Avenue is on one of the main routes into the village, and Bramham Community Action Group decided they had to do something to improve it. Working with East North East Homes Leeds Outer North East Area Panel and local environmental charity Groundwork Leeds, designs were developed to transform the space into an inviting and attractive garden space for those living nearby, as well as a colourful greeting to visitors of the village. Groundwork also helped the group secure the required funding.

The new community garden will feature attractive seating made from recycled plastic, new surfacing, and extensive planting to improve the physical appearance and attract a variety of wildlife throughout the year. Care has been taken to ensure that the garden will be fully accessible to wheelchair users and those with impaired mobility.

Keith Innocent from Bramham Community Action Group said: “We are excited that work will shortly start on this piece of land and we are sure that every resident, young and old, will be delighted with the finished community garden.”

Angelena Fixter, chair of ENEHL Board, said: “This is an exciting new scheme that will create a wonderful spot of colour and an area to relax in within the local environment. I’m looking forward to celebrating the success of the project with the local residents next year!”

An additional £4,500 has been awarded to the scheme by ENEHL Outer North East Area Panel. The project has also been supported by Bramham Parish Council and Bramham in Bloom. Work is due to start shortly.
