Litter pickers at the ready! The Junior Wardens, leading by example
A group of Morley school children have taken local litter problems into their own hands.
Eight young people spent the afternoon of 9th March litter-picking and tidying up on the Harrops Estate in Morley. They managed to enlist the help of a number of other estate residents plus local councillors - but make no mistake as to who was in charge of the operation.
As members of the Harrops Junior Wardens scheme, based at Fountain Primary School in Morley, these youngsters are no strangers to being active in their local community. The scheme - led by Groundwork - gets young people involved in a variety of activities which encourage them to take pride in their local area.
Lisa Farnell, a mentor at the school and estate resident, has been involved in running Junior Wardens and said: “Having these sessions for the kids, and the skips provided free, is really great for the estate. Hopefully it will lead to residents becoming more involved in any future projects.”
Skips were provided on the day by Leeds City Council (Outer South Area Management Committee) and Aire Valley Homes, for use by all local residents.
