.Groundwork Leeds’ Green Doctor scheme is delighted to be named the Yorkshire and Humber Regional winner of the NEA Community Footprint Award 2011 – 2012. The award, which runs in conjunction with British Gas and the Department of Energy and Climate Change, rewards projects throughout England which work to combat fuel poverty and increase carbon savings.
Groundwork’s Green Doctor programme works with households across Leeds and Calderdale which are at risk of fuel poverty. Residents gain one-to-one advice on how to save money on fuel bills by reducing their energy use. The Green Doctor scheme has also been successful in providing work experience placements and qualifications to unemployed people across the two districts.
Mathew Roberts, Senior Climate Change Co-ordinator at Groundwork Leeds, commented:
"I'm delighted that the Green Doctor service has been recognised for its contribution to tackling carbon reduction and fuel poverty. The team has worked hard over the last 5 years to make over 3500 home visits in the region, they have shown real dedication, often going above the call of duty to assist clients."
The NEA Community Footprint Award is judged by senior representatives from NEA, DECC, and British Gas. Groundwork’s Green Doctor was awarded £2,000 which will be used to help deliver and further develop the scheme. Green Doctor’s success means it is automatically entered for the national award, the winner of which will be announced in due course.
