Local environmental charity Groundwork is thrilled to announce that they were winners at last Thursday’s Yorkshire Post Environment Awards. Groundwork won the award for its Green Doctor service under the climate change category. The prestigious awards recognise the determination of groups and individuals to protect the environment and reduce their carbon footprints.

The Green Doctor service tackles fuel poverty in low income households across West Yorkshire in two ways. Firstly through energy efficiency workshops to tenants and residents which cover practical no cost ways to save energy and money. Secondly, home visits are performed where energy saving measures are fitted free of charge. As well as saving households money, improving their health and reducing their energy usage, the service provides employment opportunities for local long-term unemployed young people in Calderdale, Bradford and Leeds through the Government’s Future Jobs Fund.

Glen Duckett, Community Regeneration Manager at Groundwork, says:

“This is a great accomplishment for us and fantastic recognition for our Green Doctor service. The Green Doctor has had a busy yet successful year, which has included expanding the service to Calderdale and creating jobs for local young people. With 2010 off to a winning start, we look forward to continuing the service and helping more households to save money, keep healthy and reduce their impact on the environment.”
