A willow wonderland!

Willow fedge - Long Lee Primary, KeighleyLong Lee Primary School in Keighley has received an early Christmas present from the willow-weaving fairies at Groundwork...

Our entire schools team went out this week to construct a willow 'fedge' (a cross between a hedge and a fence) in the school grounds. We had previously helped the school secure almost £10,000 to develop their outdoor learning provision and outdoor classroom, and the fedge is the latest addition to this fantastic resource.

For the first year of its life the fedge will be more fence-like, until the willow takes root and starts to grow leaves. By the second year the structure will have turned into a luscious hedge, with a tunnel providing access into the outdoor classroom.

The fedge will eventually be joined by a pergola, for shade, and a variety of mature trees and shrub planting. This will all be accented by the hundreds of bulbs that the children from Long Lee have already planted around the entrance.

We're now looking forward to the spring and summer when the fedge should really start coming to life!
