A full week of environmental action will be delivered in Seacroft, east Leeds
The week of April 19 2010 will see a massive partnership effort to improve the environment of the Parklands estate, South Seacroft, in East Leeds, due to a partnership between East North East Homes Leeds, Outer East Area Panel and local environmental charity Groundwork. The environment week will join East North East Homes Leeds, Outer East Area Panel and Groundwork with local community groups, schools and organisations, including Ironwood residents’ group, Space 2, SWAG (Seacroft Women’s Action Group) and Leeds City Council.
The Parklands estate has suffered from social problems, including arson, fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour. The environment week will help to address these issues as well as create community benefits in the form of the preparation of a growing area within the grounds of the Alston Lane Community Centre for the production of locally grown, fresh healthy food.
The full week’s activities include tidying up the estate’s green spaces and cutting back overgrown vegetation, shrubs and hedges. Additional work includes the photographing of the different stages of the week by SWAG which will be displayed in the local library to promote the group and what’s happening in the area. Leaflets will be distributed around the estate to promote the environment week and encourage local tenants and residents to get involved.
Nickie Ramsden, Community Coordinator for East Leeds at Groundwork, says:
“We’re really looking forward to working alongside local groups, schools and organisations on the Parklands estate. We’ve especially been inspired by the work of SWAG who’ve helped to create a real community feel at the Alston Lane community centre and are hoping that lots of people will embrace the outdoors activities and join in with the environment week.”
The full list of organisations involved includes East North East Homes Leeds, Outer East Area Panel, Leeds City Council’s Area Management team, the probation service, Seacroft and Manston schools, Space 2, SWAG, Ironwood residents’ group and Leeds City Council’s Streetscene.
