CyclistsJoin our course and get confident on the roads

Is it time for you to get back in the saddle? We are running a series of free cycle sessions for employees of businesses in the Rotherham part of the Dearne Valley.

The sessions aim to encourage the uptake of a healthy and active form of exercise as well as also providing a fun distraction from the workplace.  It doesn't matter what your cycling ability is - you can be a complete novice, have not ridden a bike for several years or be an enthusiastic cyclist who just wants an excuse to get out on your bike.

Sessions will include improving confidence on your bike, cycling on roads, identifying routes around the Dearne Valley and bike maintenance.  The cycling project also aims to encourage local businesses and their employees to take steps to reduce their carbon footprints, by reducing the number of vehicle journeys within the Dearne Valley.

Travelling by bicycle to and from work can help reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, which contributes to climate change and may lead to future extreme weather events in the area such as the floods of 2007.  It can also help save money by ceasing the reliance on cars for commuting to and from work therefore cutting fuel bills.

Luke Wilson, Special Projects Co-ordinator for Groundwork Dearne Valley said “The free cycling sessions are a great way for employees of local businesses to escape the work place to increase their levels of physical activity, stay healthy, reduce stress and contribute to the sustainable development of the Dearne Valley”.

The free sessions which are funded by NHS Rotherham will be running until March 2010 and are open to all employees of businesses in the Brampton, Kilnhurst, Swinton, Wath, West Melton and Manvers areas of the Dearne Valley.
